INCREASE IN STOLEN VEHICLES

The Newport News Police Department has experienced a significant increase in the number of stolen cars since the first part of June and is asking the public’s assistance in both solving these cases and preventing auto theft. Since April 1, 2005 there have been 180 stolen autos in the City. While this is a significant drop from the same time frame last year, there has been an increase from 45 in May to 63 in June. It seems as though many of the cars are being stolen by teens who use them to joyride. There are easy measures that drivers can take to help prevent their car being stolen. Nearly 20% of all stolen cars have the keys in them; about 50% of stolen cars are left unlocked. Hidden keys can easily be found if a thief takes time to look. Where the driver parks can also help prevent a stolen car; well-lit areas and attended lots should be used whenever possible. Many cars are stolen because the driver has left the car running while they are at a convenience store, ATM, gas station, etc. In the warmer months, it is common for drivers to leave the windows partially down. This is not a good idea. If a garage is available it should be used and both the garage doors and the car doors should be locked. If leaving the car unattended for an extended period of time, the driver may wish to disable it by removing the electronic ignition fuse, coil wire, or rotor distributor. In addition to taking these measures, there are many devices that may prevent a stolen car. These items include steering wheel locks and electronic security systems among others. Stolen cars are more easily traced when the vehicle identification number has been etched on car windows. The Public Information Office will arrange for any interviews necessary for coverage of this topic.

Anyone with information that may help solve any auto theft case is asked to anonymously call Newport News Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP
